Student/Part-Time Opportunities and Benefits

Benefits for student and part-time staff at the Union include:

  • Students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 are eligible for an annual scholarship in the amount of $500 ($250 per semester) from the Union.
  • Hourly student employees are exempt from social security and Medicare taxes being withheld. This is commonly referred to as FICA; the current FICA rate is 7.65% of gross wages.

Bowling Center Guest Service Attendant
$9/hour

Key Functions:

  • Demonstrate a high standard of customer service.
  • Personally assist customers with bowling, billiards, engraving, refreshments, and video games.
  • Greet all customers with fast, friendly, personalized service and develop a rapport with return customers. 
  • Accurately ring sales orders into the cash register and count back change to customers in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Help with the upkeep of bowling lanes, automatic pinsetters, ball return, and automatic scorers.
  • Ensure food and beverage items are stocked and replace pop syrup boxes when needed.
  • Prepare food items and clean cooking equipment.
  • Report all customer complaints to the Manager/Bowling and Recreation.
  • Report potential safety hazards, employee incidents, and operations inconsistencies to the Manager/Bowling and Recreation.
  • Perform custodial duties by cleaning the bowling center, Hunt Brothers Pizza, seating areas, and billiard area.
  • Follow all local and state health and safety regulations.
  • Follow all safety and lockout procedures related to the bowling center.
  • Maintain accurate and timely bowling-related records to include all stops run and for pinsetter parts repaired/replaced for inventory.
  • Properly prepare for, record, and input league scores and standings into a 12-strike system. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace. 
  • Other duties/tasks as assigned.

Additional Information:​

  •  Ability to lift 25 pounds on a consistent basis.
  • Ability to remain on feet for a long time.
  • Ability to verbally communicate with customers, vendors, callers, and coworkers.

Building Operations Assistant

Pay Rate: $9.00/hour

Key Functions:

  • Clean and set up rooms for special or catered events; this includes lifting and/or moving chairs and tables, sweeping carpets, wiping down furniture and windows, and scrubbing floors.
  • Check all rooms during shift to ensure set‐up and cleanliness.
  • Set up and take down folding tables and chairs as well as other set‐up equipment as directed.
  • Periodically wipe down chairs and tables.
  • Dump trashcans and take trash to the trash room.
  • Keep custodial closets clean by putting carts, vacuums, and cleaning supplies back after use and disposing of trash as needed.
  • Work with different cleaning chemicals in a safe manner.
  • Pick up trash in restrooms on a regular basis and stock toilet paper and paper towels as needed.
  • Dump trash, flush toilets, clean mirrors, and wipe down sink areas to ensure bathroom cleanliness.
  • Report any repairs that are needed to maintenance repair technicians and take broken furniture directly to the shop area.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service by assist customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist in any other custodial duties that are assigned to promote the well‐being of the Union.

Additional Information: 

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time while having to bend repeatedly.

Key Functions:

  • Responsible for customer experience by maintaining efficient, fast, friendly, and personalized services by developing a rapport with our customers.
  • Be knowledgeable about our products and services.

ID Center Assistant

Pay Range: $9.00/hour

Application Requirements: Union Application

Key Functions:

  •  Accept deposit/payments for Cat Cash accounts, Gift Cards, Departmental Dining Cards, and other accounts handled in the K-State ID Center. Must be able to explain to customers accurately what the various accounts are and how they may be used. Complete these transactions by properly handling cash and other tender methods and posting the information into the correct computer program. 
  • Make new and/or replacement IDs for University students, faculty, and staff by verifying they have been accepted or employed by K-State through proper documentation. Complete the correct forms with necessary information and accurately post this information into the computer programs and produce the cards utilizing the card printer. 
  • Abide by University and Union policies and procedures regarding the security of student records. 
  • Demonstrate high standard of customer service. Answer phone calls made to the ID Center. Accurately answer questions for customers or transfer them to the proper individual or department to answer questions or address their needs. 
  • Record daily/monthly number of IDs replaced and record and post ID bill payments. 
  • Be familiar with and assist with the daily operating and closing procedures as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities: 

  • Experience in handling and reconciling cash.
  • Excellent customer service skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and be organized.

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for an extended time.
  • Visual acuity and finger dexterity to operate a computer and other office machinery.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. 
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Maintenance Assistant

Pay Rate: $9.00/hour

Key Functions:

  • Assist in repairing equipment and structural items in the Union.
  • Assist in troubleshooting leaks, stoppages, and inadequate supply or faulty operations of water, steam, gas and airlines.
  • Make appropriate repairs to help prevent future occurrences.
  • Maintain a safe environment in the shop by cleaning and storing appropriate tools.
  • Assist in duties that may pertain to cleaning the plaza, painting, staining, varnishing, fixing light fixtures and emergency lights testing.
  • Operate a two-way radio.
  • Demonstrate a high standard of customer service by assisting customers throughout the building.

Additional Information:

  • Experience using basic tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, etc.
  • Experience using power tools such as saws, drills, etc.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time while having to bend repeatedly.

• Reconcile receipts with individual statements
• Resolve issue of missing receipts/incorrect receipts/collect receipts from staff
• Post credit card receipts into QuickBooks
• Reconcile account for payment

Agency Payment Voucher (APV) specific
• File APVs
• Organize and maintain APV filing system
• Assist with rotating files/records at the end of each fiscal year
• Retrieve APVs when requested

Accounts Receivable (AR) specific
• Generate reoccurring invoices
• File invoices with backup documentation
• Run monthly customer statements
• Follow-up on past due accounts
• Keep customer accounts current with up-to-date information
• Process customer credit card payments over the phone
• Assist customers needing invoice copies
• Make deposits to include: Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and sales deposits

Accounts Payable (AP) specific
• Create reoccurring APVs for payment
• Post payables to vendor accounts in QuickBooks
• Scan and upload APVs to university’s Division of Financial Services
• Pick-up checks from Unger Complex
• Post payments to QuickBooks
• Prepare checks to mail with accompanying APVs
• Complete corporate bank card payments

Business Office specific
• Provide excellent customer-centric service to both in-person and phone customers
• Help with lost and found items/contact owners
• Serve as back-up cashier to include: making change for customers, logging incoming/outgoing checks, checking out cash bags, and processing petty cash reimbursements
• Maintain clean office by dusting, ensuring items are properly stored and organized
• Assist with mail and package distribution
• Execute other duties and special projects as assigned and instructed

Skills and Abilities

Qualifications Preferred

• Student majoring in business or accounting-related degree
• Experience working with monetary transactions
• Knowledge of Quickbooks and Microsoft Office
• Ability to work with multiple interruptions
• Knowledge of general office processes

Physical Demands:

Work in a general office environment. Remain seated/stand 75% of shift. Finger dexterity/movement for typing, picking up small objects and utilizing varying office equipment. Sight to view computer, documents, and general office machinery. Verbal and written communciation to present, convey and exchange information and ideas accurately and quickly. There are no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physcial conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key functions of this position.
